Content:
Ethics trainings are often experienced as boring, full of legal jargon and overly simplistic in providing guidelines for managing the complexities of real life therapeutic relationships. How can we go beyond meeting minimal standards and move towards the ideals that bring us to the helping professions?
The morning portion of the training will explore “positive ethics,” an approach developed by Handelsman, Gottlieb, and Knapp, which empowers us as the therapists to move beyond just avoiding ethical violations to focusing more on identifying the strengths, values and ideals that inspired us to become therapists. The afternoon portion examines how our personal and cultural values interweave with the regulations and principles that govern professional ethical standards.

POSITIVE ETHICS OBJECTIVES
You will be able to:

  • Describe 3 philosophical approaches to ethics.
  • Define “Positive Ethics”
  • Outline 5 strengths and 10 values you bring to your work.

POSITIVE CULTURAL COMPETENCY OBJECTIVES
You will be able to:

  • Define the Acculturation Model of ethics.
  • Outline 3 strategies for developing personal, professional, and global awareness.
  • Identify ways that you can incorporate personal, professional, and global awareness for increasing ethical acuity.
